Private Eye feed through LiveJournal
Every fortnight, the Private Eye team update their website with a couple of tidbits from their latest issue. Being an Englishman living overseas, I’m very grateful for this, because it’s the only way I can read the bloody thing. This, however, means visiting the website every fortnight, and I’m a scatterbrain when it comes to such things. With this in mind, I used some programming skills to syndicate the following RSS feed for personal use. I thought I’d let you in on it, too: http://www.jdbartlett.com/rss/private-eye.xmlI would also like a hand with something. What would be really neat would be to create a syndicated LiveJournal account to turn this RSS feed into something we can all add to our friends lists. What that would mean is that each week, our friends lists could be updated with the latest from private-eye.co.uk, including (if it keeps working as well as it does right now) images of the strips and look-alikes. Unfortunately, this can only be set up by someone who owns a paid-for LiveJournal account, something my current budget doesn’t allow for. If anyone in this community has a paid-for LiveJournal account, please click here and scroll down to the bottom of the page that loads up, then paste the URL of the Private Eye RSS feed ( http://www.jdbartlett.com/rss/private-eye.xml) into the textbox marked “Feed URL” and click submit -- that’s all it takes. For more information about LiveJournal’s syndicated accounts feature, please click here. For an example of something like this having been done in the past, please click here to see The Onion's syndicated LiveJournal account. | | Monday, November 10th, 2003 | 11:16 am [fraserspeirs]

Eurovision Iraq Backlash
The UK's worst ever placing in the Eurovision Song Contest was achieved last night. Some pair of tenth-rate artists scored a resounding 0 points. The excuses, however, are first-rate: "I think the UK is suffering from post-Iraq backlash" - Terry Wogan "I think politically we are out on a limb at the moment. As a country I think we paid the price last night" - composer Martin Isherwood "perhaps there was an element involved of whether we should have gone into the Iraq war" - Cheryl Baker Current Mood: ROTFL | | Friday, May 23rd, 2003 | 12:36 pm [fraserspeirs]

Black - White "Celtic never lost this game tonight" - Mudo MacLeod, Radio Scotland, describing Celtic's, er, 3-2 defeat by FC Porto in the UEFA cup final. | | Wednesday, May 7th, 2003 | 12:07 pm [fraserspeirs]

Sheridanisms

More drivel
Almost all of this article on the BBC is drivel: The Metropolitan Police remains "institutionally racist" 10 years after the murder of Stephen Lawrence, the commander of Scotland Yard's anti-racist unit has said Somewhat surprisingly, someone whose job would disappear if she declared x to be true has declared x to be false. | 8:22 am [fraserspeirs]

" To say that our editorial line was unpatriotic is to deny the democracy we're instilling in Iraq" - Piers Morgan, Editor, The Daily Mirror (on BBC Five Live) No wonder Private Eye calls him "Piers Moron"....... | | Thursday, April 10th, 2003 | 8:34 am [fraserspeirs]

The Flag
Late last night on BBC Five Live, they had an analyst from the Heritage Foundation on to talk about 'vindication' of the Bush policy toward Iraq, alongside a leading anti-war protester. Anti-war lady: < makes a very long and nuanced point about legality and consequences >
Nicky Campbell (for it is he): Right. OK. Umm. Mr. Analyst - will we see any more Stars and Stripes draped on statues?
Mr. Analyst: Who cares? Never say the media don't tackle the burning issues....... | | Tuesday, April 8th, 2003 | 5:54 pm [fraserspeirs]

What we believe in
From Private Eye this week: Thanks to basketball star Tyroon Lue, who plays for the Washington Wizards, we now understand what America is fighting for. “I definitely feel for the families and friends of those who have to go over there and fight the war,” he told the Associated Press, “but we also have a war we have to fight, too -- the Washington Wizards are trying to make the play-offs. It’s pretty much the same thing. They’re going over there to fight for what they believe in, what we believe in as a country. We’re fighting for what we believe in as a basketball team.” |
